Birds that nest in southern Africa winter to the north in the tropics, while birds that breed in southern Europe and Turkey migrate south to, you guessed it, tropical Africa. I wonder whether birds that breed in Europe ever meet up with those nest in southern Africa? Cyprus is one of those places where anything can turn up.

Like many others, this village was totally abandoned and only recently repopulated, with a current population of only 18 people. In the European Union there are only 10,000 mature bears (source: IUCN). Not at all.

Over a few obstacles, we follow the dirt track into an abandoned and overgrown claypit. Yet, Starlings cannot dig and are happy to use abandoned cavities. In the south of Europe, pines do not normally appear at this altitude – a mere 260 m / 850 ft – and these ones were clearly planted, some half a century ago.

Further down the road, we reach a derelict building with a large veranda hidden among the trees – an abandoned hunting lodge (if I were in a situation to invest, I would choose to upgrade this into a luxury wildlife lodge). One White-eyed Buzzard has turned its back to us. It is too early to show.
