Birders derive “value” from birding. But does the value of a particular trip come from the number of birds seen, viewing a particular species, seeing an endangered species, catching a glimpse of a rarity, adding a lifer, or something else? How much do birders value a birding experience?

We had three target birds to find there though two of them likely wouldn’t be findable until after dark. But the one we could find during daylight, the Puerto Rican Lizard-Cuckoo , was a bird we couldn’t miss if we wanted to get all of the endemics and Guanica is supposed to be the best place for them on the island.

No matter where or when we bird, we have our targets. Our bogey or nemesis species, birds that we would opt to see over others. Back in the early days of birding with optics, I wonder if such wanted species would have been birds that were much more common in present times. This bird does indeed glow.

In September of 2017, Puerto Rico was hit by two powerful hurricanes: it was grazed by Irma and then clobbered by Maria, a Category 4 storm that cut a devastating swath across the island. Immediately after hurricanes, surviving birds appear to wander in an effort to find any remaining food supplies and habitat.
