Rancho Naturalista Lodge, Costa Rica, or When Harry Met Mercedes

She started guiding at Rancho in 2016, only to embark upon a Costa Rica Big Year in the next, 2017. And yes, sometime in 2018, Mercedes and Harry started dating. My other guide, Mercedes Alpizar, grew up near the Rancho in the Turrialba area, graduated in Ecological Tourism and studied English at the University of Costa Rica.

Birds of Bolivia: Field Guide–A Book Review

One of these days, Jeopardy will feature a category called “Field Guides” and the first clue will be: “This landlocked South American country finally got its own bird field guide in 2016, but it wasn’t available in the United State until 2019.” This unfortunately happens with the large Tanager (Thraupidae) family here.

I have now seen and photographed this species there in February of 2016, early August of 2020, and in July of 2015, 2016, 2018, and now, 2021. (In And we do, in fact, have some scrawny members of the family here in Morelia, but they hardly deserve the name. This fellow, however, was the real deal.
