First birds came in the form of migrants and resident species that live in an oasis of precious green space near home. Those kept me below the 700 species threshhold but I won’t complain about 691 species. 48 Hummingbird Species. I also saw a high percentage of the raptor species possible in Costa Rica.

Corey saw 115 species of bird on Saturday alone so he had lots of to choose from in picking his Best Bird of the Weekend. My own take was much more modest, but I managed to find a few fancy warblers in Cobbs Hill Park for my mother-in-law, foremost among them the dazzling Blackburnian Warbler. The majority are clearly Mallards , followed by Garganeys , with one and possibly more Green-winged Teals , also Ferruginous Ducks … Surprises among them are one Common Shelduck , a species that most likely breeds some 15 mi from here (and my first shelduck of the year) and an even greater surprise: two Eurasian Wigeons.
