Penguins on the Beach

Oh, and I need to sort out about 4000 photos and add 250 year birds to 2014 and 400 to 2015… So , yeah, I’m kind of in a state. So here are some photos of penguins instead. It was certainly more fun than the last penguin I wrote about. Boulders Beach. Demanding youngsters. And a moulting site. A bit of preening.

Best Bird of the Year 2014

2014 has been a good year for us at 10,000 Birds. Larry starts us off right with an owl that makes birders drool: I was able to see and photograph many great birds in 2014 but my Best Bird of the Year would have to be the Great Gray Owl , the largest Strix in North America. That’s Redgannet’s BBOTY at the top of the post.

Amazing Alcids at Shinnecock Inlet

And it had been awhile: my last visit there was in 2014!) Though I was out on the jetty enjoying the brisk breeze and the sound and smell of the ocean I was seriously lacking any flying penguins of the north. The Common Eiders and Black Scoters were nice though. It’s hard to believe how pretty adult male Common Eiders are.
