The last time I had seen a Summer Tanager was during a Christmas Bird Count in 2012. The only harassment came from the resident Red-tailed Squirrel family – which seemed to be more curiosity than anything else, as their nest was just about two feet away. Hopefully they found a suitable place nearby to raise the next generation!

Telia watches him in half-amusement, then raises and gives a low, bull-like roar, provoking the lapwings to an excited screech, makes a few steps and lies down. Telia yawns, raises and sprays her urine on a dead tree stump, marking her territory. The other two are motionless.

For a heart-stopping second he lost altitude, then he raised his wings and rocketed up toward the far trees. That night Ty and his family looked through the photos. Ty died peacefully at home yesterday, on October 17, 2012. Suddenly he changed direction and flew across the parking lot, directly above the gathered crowd.
