Rock & Rawhide has been working with the city facilities to help increase awareness and adoption rates since their founding in late 2011. As the only organization in New York City whose doors are open to any animal in need, AC&C rescues thousands of New York’s homeless, neglected, abused and abandoned animals each year.

Sarah Atlas is a search-and-rescue dog handler, one of many civilian volunteers who serve with New Jersey Task Force 1. They were to be deployed to Ground Zero with 200 other members of New Jersey Task Force 1, including structural engineers and medical workers, as well as other search-and-rescue people.

Hal Herzog’s “ Some We Love, Some We Hate, Some We Eat ” (Harper 2011), though fascinating, is ultimately depressing for vegans and animal rights activists. Many of us have difficulty with the idea of keeping “pets.” On that topic and a few others, Herzog doesn’t include what for lack of a better term is “vegan thinking.”

Once gregarious and outgoing, she withdrew from her family and friends, from everyone except her pet cats. Henry’s sister, Dolly, a poodle living the perfect dog life, was minding her business as the sole pet of the family in Cathy and Donna’s house when the pair decided to rescue the cat. Even attendance has increased.
