This Bald Eagle was a sight worth seeing! In 2011, my first attempt at Black Rail was a failure when Black Rails neither called nor showed.

“Do you see the eagle?” Time enough, I suppose, for our newcomers to figure out that those aren’t eagles. although in real life Osprey are most likely to face off with thieving Bald Eagles and the occasional Raven , the Missoula Osprey’s avian opponents include the Idaho Falls Chukars and Orem Owlz.

In fact, the very first person to guess, Nick , managed to get the third quiz picture correct by calling it a Bald Eagle. Of course, that was the easiest of the three because though the bird in the image is captive, a bird that was injured and can’t be returned to the wild, Bald Eagles do occur regularly and naturally in Queens.

The extra nice thing about his choice is that he saw it because of a 10,000 Birds post: In my planning to visit my daughter in Sleepy Hollow NY I checked out birding in the area and came across Corey’s excellent blog from June 2, 2011 about birding Rockefeller State Park Preserve. Not only did it fly in but it attacked a Bald Eagle!

On my visit, which was on Sunday morning, 23 October 2011, the most common birds were yellow-rumps, robins, and flickers. birders on the dike at Higbee Beach before sunrise Call notes, flight style, shape of tail, length of wing, and overall jizz are all buzzing through the heads of the birders on the dike as the birds blow by.
