They believed there was potential for sheep in those days, but now there are only cattle. The cattle are a cross breed of Brahman and shorthorn, so they can withstand the extreme weather. There are cattle stations around Broome that are on both sides of the highway going either north or south. It is a truly magnificent sight.

On that glorious day, I observed ten critically endangered birds, representing 8% of their Costa Rican, or 2% of their global population!! It was not the first note I have published, but was the only one about a bird I have never laid my eyes upon! That was not all, a few days later, by one village rubbish dump, not far from Ahmedabad, we had more than 100 Egyptian Vultures (above); plus 20 more at the dead cattle dumping site at the outskirts of the city.

Of the estimated 500 million cattle in India, only 4% were destined for consumption by humans as meat. Some smelly sewage ponds? Oh, don’t bother responding. A war zone?

Smooth-billed Ani ( Crotophaga ani ) is a widespread and ubiquitous bird in disturbed grassy areas throughout much of the neotropics, including most of the Caribbean Islands. Incredibly social, Smooth-billed Anis form monogamous pairs that build a communal nest where all birds share in the responsibilities of feeding and tending to the young.

I wouldn’t mind watching birds through palm leaves forever! From my poolside viewpoint I can encompass four countries: Egypt where I am and, over the sea, Israel to the far left (there’s a birding mecca of Eilat), Jordan in the middle and finally the endless deserts of Saudi Arabia to the right. Focusing… Cattle Egrets !
