As I have explained before these islands are the best place for a lot of the birding here because they are more easily protected from introduced mammals which wreck such havoc on the wildlife here. Since 1984 it has been planted with native bush and pests were controlled, and is now used as a wildlife reserve.

Some articles speculate that the nests offer protection against the cold. A 2009-10 survey of Monk Parakeet nests in the greater Chicago area found 42% of the nests were in trees and 58% were in man-made structures. On my pre-CBC scouting trips, I have increasingly found Monk Parakeet nests in, of all things, trees and bushes.
