The Nisqually estuary was restored in 2009 by removing dikes and reconnecting 762 acres with the tides of Puget Sound. Over 200 species of birds can be found on the refuge, depending on the time of year. I am still looking for that elusive Hairy Woodpecker, but I did get to add a Red-breasted Sapsucker to the list.

The irony of birding in tropical forest is that although there are literally hundreds of bird species, a pretty high percentage of them are naturally rare. It also means that you can bird the same rich site for days on end and just keep seeing new species and new behaviors. This was a major treat!

Phillipps’ Field Guide (I’ll be using this shortened form of the title) covers 673 avian species, including 59 endemics, and 53 species that have not been documented yet for the area but which may show up in the next few years. Now, I’m not so sure.

The essays are arranged in almost AOS taxonomic order, with changes made to lessen confusion for new birders–falcons are grouped with hawks, all water birds come before land birds, etc. His field guides are known for images that simultaneously portray notable field marks and also the ‘personality’ of a bird species.

Honeyeaters are “active, noisy and pugnacious” and there are a lot of them–76 species–in Australia. The colored font is also used to indicate measurements, voice, and notes.
