In 2008, with my family decided to build the Limneo Lodge , a small accommodation with only 9 rooms. Since then, the majority of my guests became birders and wildlife photographers. About the same time, I made another dream come true, and started offering wildlife watching and photography boat tours at the lake.

More precisely I wanted to learn how to draw wildlife. A self-taught Canadian wildlife artist, he has been fascinated by birds from childhood – their physical charm, their voices, their intriguing habits. He died on July 27, 2008. I guess it’s a gift you either have or you don’t.

That’s quite the list of charismatic and unique wildlife to add to your potential list of sightings. And Giant Otters are still common in the rivers around Karanambu Ranch, home of the late “otter lady”, Diane McTurck, who used to rehabilitate orphaned otters and whose family still runs the lodge.

Families that are endemic to the continent include such strange birds as Shoebill , Secretarybird , Hamerkop , mousebirds and rockfowl ( picathartes ) and delightful groups including bushshrikes, sugarbirds, rockjumpers, woodhoopoes, turacos and hyliotas. What are the must do destinations and what must one see?

So armed with some knowledge from the “ Access Considerations for Birding Locations ” page on the Birdability website and some research, I twice visited the Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge near Portland, Oregon with accessibility in mind. The refuge has an impressive visitor center that opened in 2008, so it is ADA compliant.

I greatly enjoyed reading these articles on diverse topics such as suet, nyjer seed, the development of humming-bird feeders, rarities at feeders, wild bird feeding in Latin America and the Caribbean, and, importantly, “funding for birds and wildlife.” The story of Duncraft is a good example. Not for nothing did 10,000 Birds readers elect the chickadee as the Most Beloved Backyard Bird of 2008 ; if we had run elections in other years, chickadees would no doubt have been front-runners. Four several years, I’ve been a volunteer at a Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. It was still alive.
