Why change for welfare purposes if there is no clear economic benefit? Such an awful practice. But, as is typical with many large industries, there is a resistance to change unless there is a clear and immediate profit windfall. I think it's just another example of short-term vs. long-term thinking, to which all humans are victim.

In 2005, a survey commissioned by the International Fund for Animal Welfare showed that the Chinese are similar to Americans in their concern for animals. Though it may be too late for too many, we can only hope that diseased animals are not left in pain but are humanely euthanized to end their suffering.
