If you live in the eastern United States, chances are you’re familiar with the clear, loud, teakettle teakettle teakettle song that reverberates through woods and thickets. This unique sound belongs to the Carolina Wren , who unsurprisingly is the state bird of South Carolina!

After spending the weekend along the South Carolina coast, I can say with confidence that I saw dozens and dozens of South Carolina’s state bird: both the original and the current version. Carolina Wrens are directly influenced by climate change. Do I think they made the right decision? Absolutely!

For the United States, there is also a state list. As of mid-November 2021, the Collaborative had submitted more than 4,200 checklists (up from 1,700 in 2018) and has observed 691 species in the United States (up from 618). The Collaborative has also added six states.

For many birders a highlight of birding the southeastern United States, maybe even the definitive birding experience of the region, is taking in the great numbers and diversity of long-legged wading birds. I discovered this surprising water bird bonanza at Huntington Beach State Park in Georgetown County, South Carolina.

Unlike Sanderlings, their legs were yellow, and they were distinctively a plover species. Not satisfied with a mere two species, I embarked on a later walk down the beach with my grandmother and mother (the dream birding team!). Now, thousands of miles away, I was looking at a member of the same species, a Wilson’s Plover !

The first, the much caricatured hard-nosed lister who stops at nothing to get just one more bird, and the second, the deep-patch birder who just wants to hang around the common species. Case in point, this past weekend I headed south to the sandhills to find a Western Tanager that had been visiting a feeder in Moore County.

The southeast tip of the Florida peninsula is not well endowed with a wide variety of sparrows in winter like the rest of the southeastern United States. We are just too far south for any of the above mentioned species, but that is not to say that we do not get any sparrows at all.
