I have always assumed that scientific researchers can overlay weather information on checklists for their research, but absent manual entry, that such information would not be available to me. I find the information helpful and insightful, as it can shed light on why some species were or were not seen on that trip.

In Europe, most of them winter south of the Sahara but an increasing share winters north of it – which sounds like an interesting research topic for people who, ahem, find such topics interesting. It is rumored that one of the researchers later became a software developer. No need to remind us all the time.

BOC has 95 colour plates illustrating more than 400 species (three country endemics, Cyprus Wheatear , Cyprus Scops Owl and Cyprus Warbler , among them), with text and distribution maps on facing pages. His work in Iraq, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Turkey remains inspirational to researchers throughout the region.

For many years now, I’ve resisted every form of listing software available, choosing instead to maintain my world and ABA life lists on a simple Excel spreadsheet. Then the fun really started… The eBird interface came back saying that a whopping 251 species needed clarification. I blame Nate Swick.

I’m going to go right to a discussion of the Species Accounts, because I know that’s where you all want to be, with the warblers. I do love the fact that the table of contents lists all three names (all pointing to the same species account). The authors note when a species cannot be sexed or aged with certainty.

In reverse order, the medals were awarded for “most species seen in a country”, to Australia with 420, USA got the silver, scoring 556 while the runaway winner was Costa Rica with 646 species. A big thank you must also go to eBird whose listing software makes it possible. May I extend my thanks to all the beats.
