Last month, I birded my favourite local patch, Beljarica – the best eBird hotspot in Belgrade city and the 3rd best in Serbia – four times. Yes, that is the place previously planned for clear-cutting, filling-up and becoming covered by concrete , so the Chinese could build their Belt and Road harbour here. Photo: Gordan Pomorisac.

Not just mine, but all the most active birders of Belgrade, Serbia, were visiting this site at least 2-3 times a month: it is so conveniently close to the city, and even reachable by the city bus 108. Reva Pond was my favourite local patch until, a few years back, construction works started there.

Serbia holds 13 per cent of the European breeding population of this “electrified” species which is not only Endangered in Europe but also listed as Globally Endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Raising the binoculars to teary eyes, I am trying to see the bird in the nest on a nearby pylon. An adult to raise its head.

ELs are fat around the waist, their weight is more pronounced towards the front end, and when you raise your fingers, letting ELs rest only against your thumbs, they start falling down, front end first. And when you raise your fingers, well balanced NLs happily rest against your thumbs, not falling to either side.

And it raises a question: if all the birds are having a party over there, am I in the wrong spot? I used to live in Botswana, where there are about 450 bird species in an area a few dozen miles from the capital; then somewhat naively moved back to Serbia with mere 250 species around the capital. And where all those birds are?

Today is the United Nations World Wildlife Day, a time to celebrate and raise awareness of the living world around us. Raising and lowering its head, like stretching. The closer one raises her head, than lies back. The bird that was lost for more than a century is looking at us. And it becomes a motionless observer once more.

Usually only several birds overwinter in Serbia – the biggest count ever was less than 10. But through binoculars I noticed small raised crests and supercilia joining on hindneck – Woodlarks ! And although half of them are within reach, I don’t really have the time to pursue them.
