In The Last of Us video game, there are two scenes where they show exotic animals surviving in the North American climate. The monkeys made sense; many species of apes and monkeys are adaptable to many climates and are similar to humans in terms of anatomy. The giraffes did not. Any and all speculation would be appreciated.

They are listed as a Species of Special Concern in Utah, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington, and as Threatened in California. This video of a kettle of Swainson’s Hawks will give you some idea of this phenomenon. This way, you can easily look up images and videos of the many fantastic birds described. This is a bit of a rabbit hole, however, and you may find yourself, as I did, spending the day watching videos of Superb Lyrebirds singing and Kea Parrots making snowballs. It’s fascinating stuff.

They are often seen on the ground since their prey consists mainly of rabbit, prairie dog and, you guessed it, ground squirrel. Note the long yellow gape, a characteristic field mark of this species. Fish and Wildlife Service and as a Sensitive Species by the Bureau of Land Management 1. This is the light morph.

A recent comment thread on Facebook about absurdly high counts of some species in the eBird database got me curious. What is the most of any one species that has ever been reported at one time? Once you start down such a rabbit-hole it is difficult to stop the plunge into full on data-nerd mode. Painted Buntings ? Gyrfalcons ?

Let’s watch this video of a chickadee on a suet cage feeder: Note how that chickadee could access that suet cage from any side and chose to hang upside down? They might eat it if they have to but it can sometimes keep those species away too. She wrote the books Disapproving Rabbits and City Birds/Country Birds.
