It feels good to start a post with some truly attractive birds – such as two species of broadbills. Strangely, there do not seem to be many papers on this species. In one paper , you can find fascinating sentences such as “The new species is most similar to D. My cats refuse to even try Fiery Minivets.

Bird-watching at Langi Crossing

We were still able to camp in our usual spot by the river, which is high enough to protect ourselves from the resident crocodiles. We soon had a decent list in our notebook and there were a few bird species that we had not yet seen this year. On our last visit in October last year we had 70 bird species for our visit.

After spending Christmas Day birding around Broome and observing 92 species we spent the week making a mental note of what bird species were where. We managed to not observe Straw-necked Ibis or Glossy Ibis all day, but had seen both species a week ago! Regardless of the weather they were well protected!

Langi Crossing birding part two

Following on from last week’s post about Langi Crossing and some of the larger birds species that you can expect to find I will now let you know of some of the smaller species you may encounter along the Fitzroy River at this location. Zebra Finch and Double-barred Finch drinking and bathing.

There were 12 Red-necked Avocet feeding in the ponds and along the fenceline there were Zebra Finch, Peaceful Doves and Diamond Doves nipping back and forth for water. We also soon realised that it would be advisable to go to bed when the birdlife went quiet, because the bird species we had seen so far would be up with first light!

But my long wait to see antelope, zebras and everything in between is finally over. You may not get the species counts that the race delivers, but you’ll have memories burned into your skull. As has been the case every time I’ve been to Africa before, I won’t be there just for play.
