Exploring one of the rugged, 4×4 side roads, my wife and I ran across a very nicely treed little valley that ended up against some steep protective rocks. Zebra-tailed Lizards, Splotch-sided Lizards, Orange-bellied Skinks and Desert Iguanas are quite common in this area, so the American Kestrels were too.

The associated bird species seek out drongos, apparently relying upon them heavily for protection. The drongo perches above the flock, snatching insects that they disturb, and keeping an eye out for predators that might go unnoticed by its hunting flock-mates. Drongos feed more effectively when in such flocks, so the benefits go both ways.

There were 12 Red-necked Avocet feeding in the ponds and along the fenceline there were Zebra Finch, Peaceful Doves and Diamond Doves nipping back and forth for water. The smallest pools of water were sustaining numerous finches including Crimson Finch, Long-tailed Finch, Double-barred Finch and Zebra Finch.

The most common finches were the Zebra Finch followed by the Double-barred Finch and then the Long-tailed Finch. The finches would use areas of bush that offered maximum protection and then drop down to the water’s edge to drink and bathe. Zebra Finch and Double-barred Finch drinking and bathing.
