The wood stork occurs and breeds in Central and South America. are considered a distinct population segment, which is protected by the ESA and the Migratory Bird Treaty act.

All swallows are included under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918 as migratory insectivorous birds and as such are protected by state and federal regulations.
