Kelly Preheim was talking about the large numbers of Snowy Owls on the nearby National Wildlife Refuge. I rushed down to aid with what I could give, taking several spare bird books, DVD’s, bird T-shirts and Birdman Productions hats along with 2 pairs of my “extra” binoculars. clothing and shelter.

That’s a threatened habitat, and one much sought after by wildlife enthusiasts. After a sumptuous breakfast (albeit one without pork products) we set out on another walk, this time up a hill overlooking the camp. Danum Valley is a conservancy that protects a large area of lowland rainforest in Sabah in northeastern Borneo.

The Poo Ponds were very productive and the wildlife was making the most of the water available and the shade provided by the excavating equipment. Wallaby seeks shelter beside an excavator. This wallaby had been sitting in the bucket as we approached and then hopped out and remained in the shade near the tracks.

Looking forward, the biggest threats to the Congo rainforest come from industrial plantations, especially for palm oil, rubber, and sugar production. The Congo Basin is the only place to shelter all three subspecies of gorilla: the Western Lowland Gorilla, the Eastern Lowland Gorilla and the endangered Mountain Gorilla.
