The Shelter Pet Project is a wonderful public service campaign from The Humane Society, Maddie’s Fund and the Ad Council! The project goal is to help the many great pets waiting in shelters. The campaign motto is “a person is the best thing to happen to a shelter pet”!

Did you know that every year, of the 8 million dogs and cats that enter animal shelters, 3 million of these healthy and treatable pets are euthanized? Luckily, The Shelter Pet Project hopes to change this! The campaign has one unified goal, to increase pet adoption. It is such a sad statistic.

Rock & Rawhide , a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that aims to increase adoptions for dogs and cats in shelters by providing toys and other items that serve as a form of distraction therapy, reducing the stress and noise levels. This shelter has hundreds of dogs and cats coming and going on a daily basis and need our help!

Begun in 1996 by the Humane Society of America, National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week encourages everyone who loves animals to bring public awareness to all the important work shelters do throughout the year. You don’t have to pay anything extra to help support your chosen shelter.

Here are a few great tips for future and current pet owners. The Shift: Instead of buying your new friend from a pet store or breeder, adopt one from a shelter. Most shelter animals are spayed or neutered, have been treated for worms, and have at least their first set of shots. Pets are the same way. Early Adopter.
