The Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge is a 15,000-acre wildlife sanctuary that provides habitat for more than 330 species of birds. It is located just northeast of the Denver International Airport and offers excellent birding opportunities.

Growing up in western Pennsylvania, she explored nearby woodlands with her mother, a naturalist, who encouraged her daughter to observe all of nature, which ultimately led to Carson’s early stories about birds. One such woman was Ada Govan, an amateur ornithologist who’d already established a bird sanctuary in Massachusetts.

If you have never been to Hawk Mountain , Pennsylvania during fall migration I would strongly recommend a visit. Sharp-shinned Hawks, Cooper’s Hawks, Bald Eagles, Golden Eagles, Merlin and Peregrine, amongst others, dazzled the crowds on this, one of the busiest weekends at this important sanctuary.
