Searching for the Puerto Rican Parrot

Way back in January Mike and I made a quick trip to Puerto Rico with the hope of cleaning up on all of the endemic species on the island. We needed to see a parrot on the one evening we had left, 17 January, and failure was not an option. How about some pictures of parrots? Our vigil began. And waited. And waited. And waited.

Southern California is loaded with parrots. Many escapes and introductions have taken place over the years and some species have found the warm, dry climate to their liking. Quite a few species are well-established and breeding from San Diego to Los Angeles and beyond. Skylarks in Brooklyn , anyone?

However, this year, we opted for a site that could also give a chance at Great Jacamar and a few other key resident species in addition to migrants. Wolfe Creek Crater birding

It is of course the food of the Night Parrot , but none were observed on this occasion! I am uncertain of the exact species of dragon that we commonly found on the rim. We actually have this species at home in our own garden, so it was nice to see the species so far away in the desert. The rim trail. Dragon on the rim.

In the more sheltered areas the heathland is given over to eucalyptus forests. The most common species are two types of honeyeater, the New Holland Honeyeater , a small black white and yellow species, and the larger Little Wattlebird. This noisy species is often heard throughout the park. And a blaze of wildlflowers too.

Geelong-Rippleside Park to Eastern Park

The big bonus was that there were several flocks of Musk Parrots , which was a first for my year list. They are a different species to those that we have at home in Broome and have a lot more black colouring on their breast. I watched the Australian Pelican, Chestnut Teal and Silver Gulls in the shallows whilst I had a warm drink.
