Looking for parrots at sites with rainforest? Arrive at the airport near San Jose in the day and you could easily see them fly overhead. Although it might not occur in the high elevations nor so much in dry forest, you would be hard pressed to not see this long-tailed bird in other places. Birding in a local park?

This is how we saw 300 plus species in three days on day trips out of the San Jose area and it’s only one of several options: High and middle elevations. A few other birds also showed, highlights including a tree full of screeching Mealy Parrots but other birding experiences par excellence were waiting in the wings.

Yeah, you might see some edge and open country species but since you can see those same birds at the edge of forests along with toucans, parrots, puffbirds, and antbirds, I strongly suggest skipping the open areas and heading to the largest areas of rainforest that you can find ASAP.

Although a lot of beautiful rainforest was replaced by bananas, cattle pasture, and other ag-lands many years ago, at least we can still enjoy great birding at a number of sites, most of which are easily accessible including Sarapiqui, the most visited site in the lowlands north of San Jose.
