But I have to admit that seeing some of the wolves, foxes, asses, and sheep of Dulan county is nice, at least as long as they do not stand in front of some exciting birds. Blue Sheep. At least they are cute. Not in a zoo but in the wild, despite the fence in the background. I do not even like that movie much.

A Blue-throated Hummingbird just flew right past us, and over to one of the feeders. When the Coopers Hawk blew thru the yard looking for a meal, it just froze, and stayed right there for nearly 5 minutes, plenty of time for me to approach, and get this picture. That is our 5th wheel on the right corner. We will be back often!

I wondered, last August, how animals endure it — the tiny ever-pumping lungs of hummingbirds, the lungs of bighorn sheep shouldering their way up mountains, they must get filled with smoke too, right? And I think this is a good move, the right move, even though part of me still welcomes the rain.

A housecat in Buenos Aires got its start in Africa, a sheep in Australia to the Middle East, a chicken in Ireland can trace its origin to the jungles of Asia. They took dogs to Australia, chickens across the Pacific, rabbits to England, horses to the New World, and then brought potatoes back.

I was fortunate to rack up a number of lifers in 2013, both at home and abroad ( Varied Thrush in Washington, Brewer’s Blackbirds in California, Burrowing Owl in the Nevada desert). Larry adds our second owl species to this list of stellar birds. It was a race between the Snowy Plover and the Spotted Owl.
