About the size of a hare, it is more clumsily jumping, than running… and that tail… It was the European Otter ! Then the machines returned, finished the asphalt and started pouring tons upon tons of concrete rubble from many construction sites in the city into the marsh that otter once ran into. I started the campaign for the protection of Beljarica, raising public awareness and collecting more than 10,000 petition signatures, not only because of its Eurasian Otters , White-tailed Eagles , Black Storks , Icterine and Eastern Olivaceous Warblers , etc., but because this large spillway protects the city from flooding.

Otters are regularly reported, but I’ve yet to see one here, but I have had a number of encounters with Wild Cats , which are quite common and may even be encountered during the day. Its author is Steve Mills, the founder of Birdwing, an organisation that has done much to raise awareness of bird conservation in North-East Greece.

A Wood Stork lands in a tree, while one Neotropical River Otter swims across and climbs a floating log. There was a Gartered Trogon right above me, and one cooperative Brown-throated Three-toed Sloth on a cecropia tree, raising its head to smile at us. A group (maybe 4-5 ex.)

The wide open swampy areas are perfect for easy birdwatching with the transpantaneira road that provides an easy access and becomes a raised platform that birdwatchers use for setting their spotting scopes and huge tripods. It is an eye opener which every birder must see before it its gone.
