While birders were out birding the coast of Queens on Friday as the remnants of Tropical Storm Fay hit New York City, Corey was stuck working. Fortunately, there is whale-watching happening on the American Princess, out of Brooklyn, but spending lots of times in Queens waters. How about you?

Our campsite was gorgeous North Lake State Park in the Catskill Mountains of upstate New York, where the air is crisp, the forests are largely intact, and the bears force you to be careful about leaving food out when you go to sleep. This has much less to do with the attraction of spending a day with me and much more to do with the 91 species we spotted in 2018 , including some pretty impressive birds for New York in October. We also saw lots of dolphins in the ocean and Humpback Whale blow.

I took my brood to explore Chimney Bluffs State Park, where we explored a glacier-carved landscape unlike any I’ve seen in New York State. I was pleasantly surprised at the prevalence of American Redstarts in those woods.
