I have been rescuing animals, both wild and domestic, since I was a child. I’ve rescued field mice to horses, and everything in between. I’m allergic to cats, but in my lifetime I’ve rescued five of them. There is no moral ambiguity here. It sickens me. They are safer and live far longer indoors.

You will, therefore, agree with Martin about moral vegetarianism but not about Christianity. Another reason is moral. One is health.

It’s always risky to say what separates humans from other animals — tool use, self-awareness, and the perception of morality no longer being as obvious a set of distinctions as they once were – but I will go out on a limb and say that narrative is at least as characteristic of humans as feathers are of birds.

He is an unabashed speciesist, putting humans on “a different moral plane from that of other animals” (11) due to various reasons, such as our “vastly greater capacity for symbolic language, culture, and ethical judgment” (11). On page 172, when Herzog writes, “I am conflicted over many moral issues involving animals,” I respond, “No kidding!”

We were told that Marco, one of the rescued chimpanzees, does a dance during thunderstorms during which he looks like he’s in a trance. He also rescued birds who flew into our windows and, on one occasion, a bird who’d been caught and dropped in front of my office by a local red fox. Is this moral? Photo by Evan Long.

Then there's the most controversial question: "Is property damage violence, and is there a spectrum where some types of property damage aren't considered violence (as in open rescues) or are considered violence but are also considered acceptable?" That's the bit that trips up many of us. Now there's a word I can get behind.
