Now that we have returned to our adopted home of La Paz, Mexico, our bones are starting to thaw out from the trip to chilly Seattle. Last Saturday, I was walking around the Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge, on a cloudy, gray 28F morning. This Ladder-backed Woodpecker was chipping away, right above my head.

Images of wildlife coated in toxic goo haunted me; particularly the birds. The current administration can now start construction on any of the public lands along the border with no concern for habitats, ecosystems, or wildlife. But birds can fly so they’ll be fine, right? Destroy the habitats – destroy the wildlife.

I flew into Denver from Mexico. I might have to add the Dallas airport staff to the list of things Buffon was right about. I was high and happy, not from “420” drugs but from the altitude and the anticipation of seeing woodpeckers and owls I had never seen before.
