Lewis’s Woodpecker, flycatcher or woodpecker? Perhaps the main target for any birder visiting in the summer is the uniquely beautiful Lewis’s Woodpecker , the most bizarre woodpecker species I have yet to encounter. A poor photo of a great bird, American Three-toed Woodpecker!

The Eurasian Wryneck is the woodpecker that doesn’t look like a woodpecker, the bird with the portmanteau name that is also a medical condition (and which may remind some people of a Nora Ephron essay). But they are woodpeckers: the genus Jynx of the subfamily Jynginae of the Picidae family.

In the woodpecker high school yearbook, the Eurasian Wryneck is described as “most likely to be turned into a low-end sock puppet” Not very flattering, but then such entries frequently are not. Myself, I was once referred to as “Mr. Their sex life is similarly unspectacular.

Curiously, shortly after he had settled down as a medical doctor in Britain, he was appointed professor of geology and natural history and mineralogy and later (at another university) of zoology and botany as well. The Latin name scouleri is derived from Prof. John Scouler (1804-1871), a Scottish surgeon-naturalist, botanist, and explorer.
