According to the HBW, in mountainous regions, picas and young marmots are among its main prey, giving me a chance to show you photos of these animals as well (without straying from the birding topic). Little Owls have a somewhat less interesting diet consisting of insects, small mammals, and birds. Himalayan Marmot. Himalayan Pica.

I never knew, until my ill-fated encounter , that these are among the most birdie of the North American flying mammals. Migration makes them vulnerable to straying: Accidental Hoary Bats have been found as far afield as Bermuda and Iceland. I cannot get the Hoary Bat out of my head. Hoary Bats roost in trees, not caves.

They had been the species I’ve most wanted to see, above any bird or fish or mammal, for many years, and they didn’t remotely disappoint. The superabundance of lions and elephants in the park meant that straying on foot beyond the confines of our fenced enclosure was foolhardy, dangerous and forbidden.

They may be “outdoor cats” with a specific owner, stray pets, feral, or may have originated in one household and are now fed or cared for by other households in the neighborhood. Free-roaming cats will hunt and kill birds, small mammals, reptiles, amphibians and fish, resulting in wildlife mortality.

According to the Birds of the Western Palearctic , they will attack Ravens and Egyptian and Griffon Vultures if they stray too close to their nest sites, while ignoring buzzards harriers and kites. The answer is likely to be a higher percentage of small mammals and birds than they take in the summer.

As anyone who follows this blog knows, outdoor cats are a veritable holocaust for wild birds, small mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and even insects. Almost every single outdoor pet cat, feral cat, or stray kills other animals , no matter how well fed the cat is through other sources.
