May 29, 2010 BP finally announces that Operation “Top Kill”, the effort to force drilling mud into the wellhead and seal it, has failed. Officials reported 48 marine mammals, mostly dolphins, and 87 dead sea turtles during the first two months alone. Government officials estimate that thousands of them are badly sealed.

The animal protection group Seal Sitters says a necropsy showed that the sea lion had suffered a shark bite and had twisted intestines in addition to a bullet wound. The one found in West Seattle was a California sea lion, protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act. Investigators say they do not know who is responsible.
