A wildlife rehabilitator friend, newly licensed, recently called to ask if he could feed a recovering Turkey Vulture anything besides defrosted rodents. Normally I feed vultures, as well as hawks and owls, defrosted mice and rats. My mammal-rehabber friends give me their unfortunates, as well. Did I have an answer for him.

In German, if you are a rodent and you are smaller than – say – a human hand, you’re a mouse. If however you are a larger “mouse”-like rodent you are a rat. Sometimes, red foxes can even be observed hunting during the day when rodents and fox babies are plentiful.

I birded savannas of Southern Africa, I birded India and Central America, and I always missed having a local mammal guide with me. No, Madagascar is the most famous for an endemic group of mammals: lemurs, sifakas, indri, aye-aye – in total, 112 endemic species and subspecies of lemurs alone! Yet, those bird guides are hefty.

Ahead of the first trip, I wasn’t thinking much about mammals, and yet, you cannot miss them, from Nilgais near villages to Indian Flying Foxes in town centres, not to mention those ubiquitous and irresistibly cute Palm Squirrels eating seeds left for parakeets. I clearly needed a mammal book.

5 or 6 times over the last year I have found decapitated or otherwise "dissassembled" mice or small rats near or under my car. The first time I noticed it, it was actually a rat leg wedged through a bolt hole on my chassis that I noticed hanging under the car. but that's pretty much it for mammals. Probably a rat.
