Fraser`s Hill in peninsular Malaysia is another one of these almost legendary birding locations in Southeast Asia. Orange-bellied Leafbird among leaves: somebody got it right naming this bird. FRIM (Forestry Research Institute of Malaysia) is open to the public who come to bathe in waterfalls, cycle, walk, picnic and attend educational events, but most of this takes part in a small section close to the entrance. Spilornis cheela , can be found right across tropical Asia, preferring forested habitats.

We were met by several Cattle Egret in beautiful breeding plumage feeding on the grass right next to the train station. Other areas of Singapore had not had this level of rubbish, but with the tidal movements in the Johore Strait it appeared much of it ended up her from both Singapore and Malaysia.

Borneo is the third largest island in the world; politically it is divided amongst three countries–Malaysia (Sabah and Sarawak), Indonesia (Kalimantan) and the sultanate of Brunei. I’m already looking up birding tours of Borneo and pricing airfares. Not a great place for a family vacation, though I think Duncan will disagree.

Another item they feed on is hunting edible bird nest swiftlets, which are quite common in edible swiftlet houses in Sabah, Malaysia ( source ). In fact, given the right chromosomes, hybridization is possible between the two species and has been observed ( source ).

Does the fact that this guide doesn’t include all of Indonesia or Malaysia mean that a birder going to these countries will have to invest in multiple field guides?

Well – I only saw two species, the most common ones at Sepilok, Sabah, Borneo, Malaysia. But they are well worth their own post, even though I cannot really write too much about them. Not that they need many words anyway. As it does not look shabby at all.
