The real upside is that it is right by my house and the Tawny Owls occasionally stray into my oak tree at night. All terrain vehicle enthusiasts ripped swathes through the wild flowers and fireraisers left the burnt out shuck of a car, so there will almost certainly be work parties to clear the litter and debris. Feeder stations!

Even so, he still knew many species and always yearned to learn about the wildlife he encountered. Watch and listen for the birds as they rustle through the leaf litter. Both can be a challenge and require patient Zen birding in the right places. Much more an outdoorsman than a birder, Fred tended to stick to the bigger birds.

Berry Springs Nature Reserve and Darwin River Dam

Last Saturday we were able to visit Berry Springs Nature Reserve late in the afternoon, which is located to the south of Darwin and alongside the Territory Wildlife Park. The wildlife park is actually going to be 25 years old next month and will have free entry to celebrate. Or I could rename this post… CROCODILES and SNAKES!

On the Edge.

In simplest terms it is where the landfast ice meets the open ocean, and it is a magnet for wildlife, especially in the 24 hour light of the Arctic spring. Wildlife concentrates at the Floe Edge, and although we just missed Narwhal as pack ice moved in just after we arrived, the place was littered with Polar Bear.

This Snail Kite, photographed from my treacherous 1999 Honda Accord, was right outside Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge, FL. A marsh littered with garbage will still provide refuge for a bittern, considering in many places most wetlands simply don’t exist any more. Townsend’s Warbler in a busy city park.

Evening Grosbeaks Really Do Exist

Sometimes it was just a matter of looking harder — walking a little further into the woods to get my first glimpse of a Blackburnian Warbler or being in just the right place at the right time to spot an elusive Yellow-billed Cuckoo. The husks of box elder seeds littered the ground, neatly stripped and devoured.

Birding beyond Brisbane

You soon adapt to the early mornings and early nights to coincide with the wildlife! The hinterland produced some amazing birds and we did find it hard work looking so high into the trees to find the Catbird that continuously called and the Wompoo Fruit Dove, but the leaf litter below also produced some well-disguised birds.
