In the United States, most believe that gaining personhood is much more probable through legislative enactment than through a constitutional change. Why the common law over legislation? Unlike legislators, judges are at least formally bound to do justice. What is the common law?

By pairing humane with slaughter , legislators have sanctioned horrific cruelty and mass murder. I'd rather extend moral consideration to something that can't suffer than fail to extend it to someone who can" (154). What if slaughter were freed (miraculously) of all terror and pain? The moral of the story is that it's all about the way we farm animals, not that we farm them that is what needs changing. Our own legislators have put us in this position because they and their friends benefit from it. There's no remotely vegan or even vegetarian (though I'm not even sure what the latter would look like) message.
