THE DUTCH parliament has voted overwhelmingly to ban the ritual slaughter of livestock. In a move aimed at further defusing the controversy over the proposed ban, deputy prime minister Maxime Verhagen gave an undertaking no new legislation would be signed into law until approved by the senate. Clearly a win for the damn livestock industry. A state law mandating "humane treatment" of downed livestock headed for the slaughterhouse was unanimously overturned Monday by the Supreme Court. The USDA National Agricultural Statistics Services shows that most livestock losses come from weather, disease, illness, and birthing problems, and not predation. To accomplish this goal, they direct control methods at only the specific animal or local wildlife populations in the area where damage has occurred.
