A Walk in the Desert

10,000 Birds

A single morning birding the thorny desert of Baringo in Kenya’s Rift Valley yielded several species at a rate I at times struggled to keep up with. While the group pursued the owl a little further, I became distracted by excited whispers in Swahili. Greyish Eagle-Owl. Pearl-spotted Owlet. Gambaga Flycatcher.

Tawny Owl , one of the first birds I remember seeing (at the age of five) Like most of us who watch birds, I enjoy listing. It was during this period that I took part in a bird race in Kenya, where I saw 290 species in one day, 442 in two. Could have done better? Confessions of a year-lister.

10,000 Birds

In my younger days I always kept year lists: my best ever year was 1986, when I topped the 1,000 mark thanks to trips to Australia, Kenya and various European destinations. Birdwatchers love making lists, with the year list one of the most important. Later in the month, a flock of several hundred Avocets on the River Alde was also memorable.
