Today an adult bird was hunting while two juvenile birds waited, knee-deep in water, apparently unclear what to do next. The adult bird had had some success and stopped hunting in favour of a dip. Using the ubiquitous Great Egret as a reference, the Goliath Heron is half a meter taller (from bill-tip to toe) and four times as heavy.

Aptly called the tube-nosed birds, on account of their raised and highly visible nostrils, these species are able to hone in on oceanic food from several miles away, based on smell alone. This is particularly useful for a bird with small eyes that hunts under the soil surface at night.

He has earned his tip. The closer one raises her head, than lies back. Telia watches him in half-amusement, then raises and gives a low, bull-like roar, provoking the lapwings to an excited screech, makes a few steps and lies down. Telia yawns, raises and sprays her urine on a dead tree stump, marking her territory.

My particular favorite terns were the Sandwich Terns, a bird I rarely see in any numbers and just generally good looking with that natty yellow-tipped bill. Some days Snowy Plovers (but no Piping Plovers) were sighted; while we saw mostly Caspian Terns, some afternoons Royal Terns predominated the numbers.

Another item they feed on is hunting edible bird nest swiftlets, which are quite common in edible swiftlet houses in Sabah, Malaysia ( source ). The first attempt in hunting was made by the male hornbill which was seen snapping at a passing swiftlet, but was unsuccessful.

From Hiro, we learn how Northern Pygmy Owls are “rule breakers,” not incubating eggs till all are hatched and then raising owlets that mature at the same rate even though the eggs were laid asynchronously (as most owl eggs are). They are also hunted. They roost and hunt, at night (mostly) when we can’t see them.

With the proposed hunting seasons on sandhill cranes being discussed in Tennessee, Kentucky and Wisconsin, we must not forget the whooping crane, which travels and winters in the big sandhill crane flocks. More states will doubtless join the queue of those proposing hunts. Another thing to consider. Now, it’s time to go to the top.
