These two islands are about halfway between the tip of South Africa and Antarctica in the Subantarctic Indian Ocean, have had relatively few human visitors, and are primarily inhabited with some of the rarest seabirds in the world and a smaller number of mammals. Very little information was available at the time, so we hired a car and off we went, following the few tips we had managed to gather but mostly our noses. One of these colonies has now been opened to tourism after researchers studying the birds deemed visits by birders to be non-disruptive. And wow, what a trip we had!

For my new book, due out in 2012 from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, I’ve been researching sandhill crane hunting. Nationwide, wildlife watchers now outspend hunters 6 to 1. I’ve received letters and emails from a number of avid hunters who find the concept of shooting cranes repugnant.

This island is home to roughly 400 wooden windmills that pattern the landscape and Ottenby Nature Reserve and Lighthouse on the southern tip. This is truly a bird-lovers dream-destination.

This is the story of Fox’s experiences on board the Achiever, the research vessel of the Raincoast Conservation Foundation. It’s a small group of 10 to 12 researchers and crew members, and Fox is the sole person responsible for the bird surveys. In the water I find a single black-tipped feather as their only trace.
