A family motel and passion for responsible ecotourism brought her home to the Oregon Coast where she and her husband, Erik, adventure and record a podcast ( Hannah and Erik Go Birding ), created in an effort to inspire others to get out and bird. It is still volcanically active with researchers periodically discovering new flows.

Joseph Chiera is a Masters student in Animal Behavior and Conservation at Hunter College in NYC and a “somewhat newbie” to birding. This island is home to roughly 400 wooden windmills that pattern the landscape and Ottenby Nature Reserve and Lighthouse on the southern tip. This is truly a bird-lovers dream-destination.

Hes only been birding since 2005 but has garnered a respectable life list by birding whenever he wasnt working as a union representative or spending time with his family. He lives in Forest Hills with Daisy, their son, Desmond Shearwater, and their two indoor cats, Hunter and B.B. Hat-tip to Stella. Wicked, right?

I write ‘focus-on-the-birds’ because it is highly probable that Harper had drawn birds before, but not in a highly focused manner that involved research, which he engaged in very seriously, and observation of bird behavior. A tradition was born. Unlike field guide images, his illustrations are not meant to be instructive.

For my new book, due out in 2012 from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, I’ve been researching sandhill crane hunting. Nationwide, wildlife watchers now outspend hunters 6 to 1. I’ve received letters and emails from a number of avid hunters who find the concept of shooting cranes repugnant.

Green-and-rufous Kingfisher is the only Cholorceryle species I haven’t seen, so observing one would complete a genus in this fascinating family. The wings on the male are remarkably shaped plus I’ve always had an peculiar interest in the nightjar family. Hat-tip to Stella. See who won the contest here!

Very little information was available at the time, so we hired a car and off we went, following the few tips we had managed to gather but mostly our noses. One of these colonies has now been opened to tourism after researchers studying the birds deemed visits by birders to be non-disruptive. And wow, what a trip we had!
