This is a cruise like no other, full of scientific lectures, over forty guides spread out on deck, bird-themed parties, and a lights-off mandate to protect birds at night. The marine protected area status was designated in 2013. It is still volcanically active with researchers periodically discovering new flows.

Very little information was available at the time, so we hired a car and off we went, following the few tips we had managed to gather but mostly our noses. Although this park was logged in the past, as a national park it is one of the few forests in Ghana that is really protected. . And wow, what a trip we had!

For my new book, due out in 2012 from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, I’ve been researching sandhill crane hunting. Nationwide, wildlife watchers now outspend hunters 6 to 1. I’ve received letters and emails from a number of avid hunters who find the concept of shooting cranes repugnant.

Fortunately, there are some people working to protect the Scarlet Macaws of Honduras. Though Scarlet Macaws are threatened in Honduras there is hope that they will get protection and recover at least some of their numbers and former range. Hat-tip to Stella. This is the story of Fox’s experiences on board the Achiever, the research vessel of the Raincoast Conservation Foundation. It’s a small group of 10 to 12 researchers and crew members, and Fox is the sole person responsible for the bird surveys. In the water I find a single black-tipped feather as their only trace.
