That’s because this fascinating part-Caribbean, part-south American country holds well over 800 species of avifauna making it without doubt one of my top three countries in all of the continent to visit. Ok, maybe not the vampire bat…but some of the more “cuddly” species are actually quite easy to see.

I would be fascinating to know how many species of birds it was pointed at during its time with me, but it must have been well over 1,000. Perhaps it’s a basic human desire to dress things up.) A pair of Sarus Cranes , digiscoped at Baratphur, India.

You can make a similar map for the small carnivores, the Mustelids, such as minks, ermines, otters, etc. Also, feral Cats on islands seem to be a serious problem, causing the extirpation of some indigenous species. It isn’t like not killing the cat is in any way humane, considering the number of animals it will kill over time.

The Refuge is now home to nearly 200 species of birds, over 50 species of mammals, 25 species of reptiles and amphibians, and a wide variety of insects, fish and plants. The Louisiana black bear’s threatened status warrants protection under sections 7 and 9 of the Endangered Species Act.

The field site I am assigned to is located in one of the most diverse ecosystems in the world and home to a particularly rich avifauna that numbers well over 500 species. Hundreds of riotously colored birds representing 14 species of macaws and parrots flock and frolic together in less than fifty meters of forest canopy.

From there, we entered a side tributary full of Ringed and Amazon Kingfishers , with Chestnut-fronted and Scarlet Macaws in flight… and then the noise: groans, croaks and grunts… and the smell… of this 65 million years old species, so old that the last dinosaurs must have fed on them!
