They are ridiculously unafraid of people there – so the cynic in me suspects that swan meat is not regarded as tasty by the Japanese (another explanation, that the Japanese just like animals too much, can presumably be discarded given the country’s very principled approach in insisting on the right to kill whales).

They would realize that wild owls fly silently through the night and grab unwary rodents, not unsuspecting packages of processed cow meat. And they would realize that any species whose young tried to nurse with a pointed beak would be a short-lived species. A pet cat raising orphaned ducklings!

Further, did those who reacted so strongly to Harambe’s killing go home and serve meat to their children? This horrible incident has raised some tough questions indeed. The zoo, surely, carries responsibility for deficiencies in its enclosure. In my opinion, neither Harambe nor the child should ever have been at the zoo.

The very first thing we notice about this large member of the Galliformes is that there is a wild version and a domestic version, and although the two are rather different, they are both given the same species name, Meleagris gallopavo. This is not entirely unknown among domestic animals, but many domesticates have no living wild version.
