Unfortunately, a record number of horses are now going to Canadian and Mexican slaughterhouses, where there is no USDA control over animal welfare conditions. I understand what animal activists are trying to accomplish, but every time I read one of these stories, I wonder if this ban was the right thing. I just don't know.

Animal rights activists have considered sentient nonhumans as persons for quite some time. In " Hungary's Spirits Are Back Up, on a Horse ," the New York Times' Nicholas Kulish reports that a thoroughbred known as Overdose, who is owned by Hungarian Zoltan Mikoczy, has become "the Hungarian Seabiscuit. You do not sell dreams.”

Montana has passed a law making it difficult to challenge the building of a horse slaughtering facility in that state. That's right, so anyone that that challenges the building of such a facility will have to have a bond at 20% of the value of said facility. Tags: horse slaughter.

I've always thought of horse-drawn carriages the way I think about greyhound racing or fur: Most people are against them, so why are they still around? The Coalition to Ban Horse-Drawn Carriages calls itself "an animal rights-protection-abolitionist organization," which I find interesting.
