This year’s awards will be handed out on April 27th, and one of the finalists has devoted himself to saving migrating birds of pray from illegal hunting. But along the way, up to 18,000 per year fall victim to illegal hunting for food and sport. Which makes him a formidable candidate for the prestigious prize.

The family Picathartidae consists of two very unusual birds; White-necked or Yellow-headed Picathartes , endemic to the Upper Guinea forests of West Africa; and Gray-necked or Red-headed , restricted to Lower Guinea forests of Central Africa. They also occur in Liberia, Ivory Coast and Guinea.

His somewhat dubious claim to fame includes a book describing his trip to New Guinea despite the fact that he never actually got to the mainland area of New Guinea ( source ). The only explanation I have for this unequal treatment is that it must be a witch hunt.

A number of these migrate from New Guinea each year to nest on the grounds of the camping ground, but they can be kind of shy for a bird chosing to nest at a birding Mecca. Patience will get you good looks, and there is something very special about seeing a representative of a group so strongly associated with the almost mythic New Guinea.

In university labs nationwide, scientists inflict spinal-cord injuries on dogs and cats, inject rats with carcinogens, test dangerous drugs on monkeys, and do all kinds of evil things to guinea pigs in the name of scientific research. Many (though not all) animal lovers kind of suck too, including myself.
