Welcome Back Waterfowl at Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge

In company with a fine group of folks from the Five Valleys Audubon Society, I made the trip to Lee Metcalf that day. An additional fly-over by more Trumpeter Swans got the group charged up. At last we plunged into the woods, hoping for Great Horned Owls.

Lewis's Woodpecker in New York State

Second of all, Lewis’s Woodpeckers are birds of the west and they rarely stray to New York State. Apparently in the past some birders and photographers had been not so polite in their behavior when a Northern Hawk Owl had been in the vicinity, and when this bird showed up the local law enforcement did not want it made public.

“Wild Rwanda – Where to watch birds, primates, and other wildlife”

At the time of writing, Rwanda had 25 endemic birds (nowadays 27 to 29, depending on the taxonomy), but among the 26 mentioned and described is also the one that is not – yet – among them: the Congo Bay-owl , not confirmed for the country and recorded only in the guerilla infested montane forests of the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo.
