So when Nutmeg Mannikin was finally, at long last, added to the ABA list last summer, it was a foregone conclusion that those birders at the ABA’s San Diego rally, of which I was one, would need to make a trip out of our way to get it. They’re not supposed to be here. We shouldn’t want them here.

Stuck in the middle (of the AOU/COS meeting)

Handing out T-shirts at the registration desk with a summer intern from the Field Museum (one of the conference’s sponsoring groups) gave me a good feel for who was around and what ornithologists are like. Exhibitors ranged from book publishers to purveyors of telemetry equipment to local bird and wildlife groups.

I continue to hope that history will someday repeat itself with the House Wren group. I have never seen a “Brown-throated ” House Wren near human settlements. This Western Grebe was from just north of San Diego. While this Black-backed Oriole is a Mexican endemic. But, so far, the split has not occurred.
