Tundra Swan at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge

Late Saturday afternoon a Tundra Swan was reported from the south end of the East Pond at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. done I headed over to Jamaica Bay. I watched the swan for awhile, occasionally being distracted by Snow Geese flying over, a Northern Flicker calling from nearby, and other birdy distractions.

May Migration in Queens

My spring has been pretty amazing so far with 146 species spotted since April 1 and Cerulean , Worm-eating , and Yellow-throated Warblers and a host of other species spotted before May even arrived, but the first couple of days in May have been even better. The Queens List Won’t Stop Growing

Queens, the finest borough in New York City, as I may have mentioned before, is where I have now seen a whopping 279 species! What species will be the ten to get me to 289? It was hunting around the edges of the West Pond of Jamaica Bay back at the beginning of March, a day that I saw both the individual in Queens and one in Brooklyn.

Hurricane Sandy Birding

Meadow Lake was high and there were hordes of gulls and geese to pick through. Back to the east we headed, trying to find access to Jamaica Bay from another vantage, but the National Guard was thick on the ground and it became apparent that we would not find the access we wished.
